HelykHomesteading

Our homesteading Journey:

In 2017 we were given the

opportunity to take on an

abandoned property. It took

us 2 days just to hack our

way through the brambles

and privet to find the house.

Since then we have been

developing the site as a homestead and turning the house from a derelict to a home.

For nearly 30 years of our life together we lived a pretty normal, everyday existence. I was working as a teacher and he was working as a                                  historical researcher. We                                 always had a dream of                                    building our own house,                                   or renovating one but                                       finances were never on                                    our side. Then, in 2013, I                                 left teaching to become a                                 forest school leader. This                                 gave me the opportunity                                  to be outside more and to                                 work in a way that was                                    closer to nature.

Homesteading means                                     many different things to                                    different people. Our                                        aim is to be as self                                         sufficient as possible                                      and to share what we

have learnt to help you on your homesteading journey whether that be learning how to make jam, or finding out how to mix concrete. Check out our videos, courses and workshops to find one that suits you.

Follow us on social media to find out which projects we will be covering next.

We soon realised that between us, we had acquired the knowledge and skills to make this building into our home. There were no services connected so the plan for living off grid was partly out of necessity. A water source was fixed up from the farm’s bore hole, we bought our first generator and started homesteading.
